Travel is fun, exciting,
and stressful all at the same time. Traveling with your children
can increase all these factors, especially the stress. Depending
on the ages of your children, a little advance planning a preparation
can make your trip fun for your children, but more importantly,
fun for you.
You should make sure you have your children's medical history
and insurance information readily available in the event of
accident or injury, and always take along a first aid kit to
attend to cuts, scrapes, and insect bites.
Allowing your children to assist in planning your vacation will
give them a sense of responsibility and give them an opportunity
to offer suggestions and ideas about what activities they would
find enjoyable. Let them make a map of all the places you intend
to visit and mark special places or events with a marker or
sticker.
They will love being included in the planning and it could increase
their patience with traveling for long distances if they know
where the route will lead them. While traveling to each location,
they will be able to look at the map and see any key points
of interest along the way.
Take along travel sizes games, cards, CD players, headphones,
and music your children will enjoy. Paper, washable markers,
and fun stickers will keep your children occupied while traveling
for long distances and will cut down on any arguments that may
arise should they become bored or frustrated.
Allow you children to take along a few special toys and a favorite
blanket or pillow. Make sure you keep snacks, drinks, and napkins
or wet wipes within easy reach. You should plan to stop frequently
to give your kids a chance to stretch their legs, get some fresh
air, and burn off extra energy. Keeping your children happy
while traveling is not impossible. A few special items and a
little advance planning will make your trip relaxed and fun
for the entire family.
